Serpents and Vipers

Matthew 23:29-30 'Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  Because ye build the tombs of the prophets and garnish the sephulchres of the righteous, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.'

Every day I read and hear more and more people trying very hard to justify their actions, behaviors and beliefs of today on their impressions of what their historical forefathers believed.  These assume they alone have a symbiotic relationship with their thoughts, and that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and all the rest would share their view of things today.  Like the Pharisees, most do not see or believe they would have ever been partakers in the atrocities of the past - only exemplary pillars of righteousness.

We all want to believe the best about ourselves.  Like the Pharisees, it is easy to commemorate the dead without ever blaming ourselves.

Of course, they didn't often times see the prophets as righteous back then.  They saw the prophets as troublemakers, rebellious, distruptive to the peace, different, often forestallers of doom and gloom.

Matthew 23:33-35 'Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?  Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synogogues, and persecute them from city to city: that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the Temple and the altar.'

Those that liked the way the government and priesthood were set up, spent a great deal of their time and energy upholding the traditions of their land.  They built memorials to the fallen men of the past and garnished their memories with speeches that made them sound implicit to their own beliefs.  They not only implied, they lied about what the dead would speak if they were there.  I grow so tired of hearing people now assume that the great names of the past would support their stance and cause for this is no way of ever knowing such a thing.  It is a terrible thing to defame their names in such a manner.

Look around you now.  How many truly righteous men and women, sent by the Lord, are being vilified, mocked, ridiculed, persecuted and even killed today by our government and its people?  We say we would not do the same evils our forefathers did, but that only means we don't see the evils we do today.

Perception of Things

Psalms 36:1-2 'The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, That there is no fear of the Creator before his eyes, for he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.'

At the creation of America, in a time when slavery was common, racism normal, theft of land and property from Native folks protected by law; the majority of our forefathers did such things. Many of us flatter ourselves today believing we would have some of the few - the very few, who opposed such manners. We idealy think we would have trumped the causes of the oppressed and gone against the legal customs of the day that gave no rights whatsoever to anyone who was not white.

And yet, what about our recent history?

At the start of World War II, did not many still feel Black Americans were wholly incapable of flying military aircraft? Were prisoners of Nazi Germay not brought to America and treated better in the South then the Black servicemen fighting against them? Were Japanese-Americans on the West Coast not rounded up, dispossesed of nearly all their lands and possessions, and sent to camps in ungodly wastelands? Although many were told it was for their safety, I ask as did they, Why were the guns trained inward and not outward?

In the 50s, in a land where Freedom of Speech and Religion is supposed to rule, how could a Republican Senator from Appleton, Wisconsin spark a reign of terror against countless Americans? How was it possible that mere accusation carried more weight than proof? Where did the hysteria come from?  How was it possible that free citizens could be legally blackballed, fired from their jobs and driven into hiding for their beliefs?

And now, even today, how is possible that America looked on passively without blinking an eye as citizens of Middle Eastern stock were routinely and somewhat legally spied upon, questioned and sequestered by government officials? Racial profiling became acceptable to the majority of whites in the West. People were suddenly afraid to get on planes with people who looked different.  Fear has a hold on many in this land and anything the government choose to do to balm it, is considered by many to be fine and justifiable.

Don't we see that this indifference to the persecution of others makes us exactly like those who broke the treaties with the Native Americans, with those who enslaved African-Americans and with those who dispossessed the Japanese-Americans.  If we agree to racial profiling for our security sake, we persecute the same as those who have persecuted before.

We flatter ourselves with righteous ideals until the sins of what we are doing truly appears as hateful. Then we act coy and pretend we knew better and were never really accomplices.  Our secret intents and latent fears were always obvious to Yahweh.

Listen And You Shall Hear

Hebrews 11:4 'By faith, Abel offered unto Yahweh a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, Yahweh testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.'

Abel did what was right in the sight of the Lord.  His obedience was acceptable to Yahweh.

Cain grew jealous of his brother.  It is a very odd and yet sinister jealousy when we really examine it.

Genesis 4:5 'But unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect.  And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.'

We still live in a world that flatters itself.  Americans are notorious for this.  As far as we are concerned, we are the best at everything, and the way we do things is the most just and civilized way there is.

When things don't go our way and our way is suddenly not acceptable, profitable or controlling the ways of the world - our countenance changes.

Genesis 4:6 'And Yahweh said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth?  And why is thy countenance fallen?'

Why is America so angry at the world?  Why are we out to take and control everything, enforce our methods on other people?  Why don't we let the Lord decide who is blessed and who is not?

I think its because in our heart of hearts, we know what Cain knew.

Genesis 4:7 'If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?  And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.  And unto thee shall be his (sins) desire, and thou (sin) shall rule over him.'

America now lives in fear of its own shadow.  We offer no sacrifice worthy of the Creator.  Instead of changing our ways, instead of trying to be acceptable, the nation as a whole has embraced the lion at the door and allowed sin to take control.  The lion no longer lieth at the door - it has come in and it is hungry.

Killing Cain

Genesis 4:8 'And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that (Abel, having learned what Cain would do to him), rose up against (Cain his brother) and slew him.'

Of course, that is not what the Bible says, but I want you to look at it written this way and think about it.  This is exactly how many choose to justify violence in the name of peace, in the name of all the good things our flattering eyes believe about ourselves.

This is what we say.  We say that we are the blessed ones, the accepted ones, the ones who should live.  We say that it is important we find out what our brothers around the world are planning on doing to us, and kill them before they kill us, destroy them before they destroy us.

If that is so, then where is the righteous blood in the earth, the blood that shall speak against sinners in the end times?

Revelation 12:10-11 'And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation and strength, and the kingdom of our Creator, and the power of His Messiyah: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our Creator day and night.  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.'

A Christian does not overcome this world by winning in this world for that is the way of Cain.

Jude 1:11-12 'Woe unto them for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.  These are spots in your feast of charity. . .'

1John 3:11-12 'For this is the message that ye have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.  Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother.  And wherefore slew he him?  Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.'

That is the crux of our lives.  It rests solely on us being righteous and allowing those who would do otherwise, to do otherwise - as hard as that may be.

1John 3:13 'Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.'

If you are like Abel, your brother Cain will hate you.  If you are unlike the world, the world will hate you.

Revelation 22:11 'He that is unjust, let him be unjust still:  and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still:  and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still:  and he that is holy, let him be holy still.'

Yahshua told us that there is a new order of things.  His righteous blood not only speaks louder than any other innocent blood ever shed - it has been heard and redeemed - justified!

Hebrews 12:24 'And to Yahshua the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel.'

Yahshua has overcome the world and defeated death.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57 'O death, where is thy sting?  O grave, where is thy victory?  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.  But thanks be to our Creator, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Yahshua the Messiyah.'

Greater Than Intent

As Passover weekend comes and goes, let us not forget what it represents to the true saints of Christ.  It is the glorious resurrection of the one who was vilified, ostracized, mocked, distrusted, alienated, condemned, tortured and crucified.  He was blackballed because the power of law allowed men to justify their sins against a certain man and those who believed Him and followed Him.

Matthew 7:13-14 'Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction and many there be which go in thereat:  Because strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leads to life, and few there be that find it.'

Don't flatter yourself or it may be to your own destruction.  The wide way is easy to walk and many go that way - most go that way.  It is not an easy thing to defy the laws of men.  It is not an easy thing to stand against slavery when the laws justify slavery.  It is not an easy thing to oppose racism when the laws justify racism.  It is not an easy thing to stand beside those who are being railroaded and crucified when the laws justify these actions.  It is not an easy thing to denounce profiling, and spying, and the loss of civil liberties, when the laws justify it.

Matthew 10:16-23 'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves.  But beware of men for they will deliver you up to their councils. . .And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for My sake, for a testimony against them. . .But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak. . .For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.  And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child; and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.  And ye shall be hated of all men for My name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.'

You now know what they intend to do.  You are well aware of Cain and his seed in this earth.  You are hated by them and there never will be any peace with them.  Do not let that pollute you.  Be righteous still.

Luke 6:32 'For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye?  For sinners also love those that love them?'

You are a Christian and thus you are very different - one of the truly few.

Luke 6:35-36 'But love your enemies and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great and ye shall be the children of the light. . .Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.'

Don't let your intent ever be the same as Cain's intent.  Don't take pride in your way of doing things - for if your way is the way of the Lord - your blood with speak for you and your reward shall be great.

Amen

AM, This stirring hub stabbed the falsities of the evil one right in the heart. Hooray for you!!

To the Cains of this world, the world is of utmost importance. Acquisitions and status, protecting what they believe is theirs is what life is for the Cains. They are who they are and will behave accordingly.

Abels, on the other hand, are the opposite. The world to us is a mere physical transient that holds no glaring attraction. We Abels understand that ALL the things in and of the world are transitory in nature and without ultimate purpose. Therefore, we exercise our freedom to be unimpressed with it's claims, its pretensions, and narcissistic love of itself.

"Don't let your intent ever be the same as Cain's intent." AMEN. The second our intent matches Cain's we are Cain.

Thank you for this wonderful Sunday morning meditation. It was an enjoyable and gratifying read. Blessings,

Forever His,

Allen, a powerful hub of calling folks out dating to the way-back times. I have read it through and am still looking at the atrocities of genocide America has seen and done as well as profiling and robbing folks. It seems to me we are witnessing the beginning of the last dance. I'm torn as to leveling myself spiritually against the warrior stance what I see is beckoning me to prepare for. I see a time of great losses inside America by the hand of the government. The last block was put into place hidden in the so called health care bill. A private presidential army. It mirrors that of Hitlers "brown shirts". I am studying the possibilities of all this information in the face of the failings of men, that you have written about today, in a nation observing one of many falsehoods.

Thanks for the good cheer RevLady. Wise as the serpent means we understand why and how Cain and his ilk do things. Being harmless as a dove is much more difficult. We can never be the one who lures them out into the field only to slay them. I like how you said, "We exercise our freedom to be unimpressed." I'm glad I could help you get your morning off to a praiseful start. Peace.

Dusty, we all get torn, we all have our personal battles to wage. The Lord reads the intent of our heart and only He can judge what is just and what it is not. No one here on earth is capable of understanding your true relationship with the Lord better than you. The nations shortcomings have always been there, that is why there always has been racism, and homelessness, and injustice, and hunger. When enough people finally suffer from these things, it suddenly becomes a real problem. If you notice, those mostly untouched by it and high above it, still don't see the problem. They still talk positively and think everything will simply work itself out. Well, it may get better for some (or it may not); but there will always be those who, as long as they can impose their will, won't give a second thought about the condition of life for those they impose it on. Oh, and don't forget, Nero had his own private guard also and look what they did to him. Peace.

Thank you for reminding, A. M.

I was just thinking of that this morning.

The pharisee and the publican.

It was the last thing I read last night.

I forgot to tell you you raised very good points about America...

Great hub. I've been told that the Old Testament prophets were known not for predicting the future, but for speaking the unpleasant truth. Nice work of prophecy here.

msorensson, yes, we often choose to wear blinders when it comes to the imperfections of the past concerning those we want to idolize. There were many men and women we called good who believed and encouraged some very inhumane philosophys. We shouldn't always be so quick to triumph the past inorder to justify our now. Peace.

William, that is true. Prophecy is more about seeing the direction things are headed and how they can be changed if people are willing to change. There are alot of "ifs" in the Bible. Sometimes the outcome in the near future is not the one people want to hear, but not hearing it won't mean avoiding it. Sometimes we have to accept the consequences first before we can move onto the places we can change. Peace.

the intent of the heart is what it's all about isn't it. How many times have we looked away from persectution of our brothers and sisters in Christ to fulfill the selfishness of the day - to get our bowl of stew so to speak at any cost.

CS, once again you are right on. The temptation to think like Esau is with us every day, and that is amazing when you really look at how much we have. Just the slightest call for patience often brings out the worst desires in some people. Peace.

gracenotes, the pups are adorable. We would love to get a dog but we just don't have the room or time it takes. Our cats pretty much take care of themselves, so thank the Lord for them. lori, what a tempting idea. The Lord did say He gave us the power to tread on serpents. My wife's grandfather use to live in backwoods Missisippi when he was young. He said he could stomp on snake heads with his barefeet and kill them when they got up on the family porch. Not sure I'm ready for that - I'd rather face Congress. Peace.

I am curious about a question you asked—which I can't answer.

"How many truly righteous men and women, sent by the Lord, are being vilified, mocked, ridiculed, persecuted and even killed today by our government and its people?"

So, tell me. How many?

Your other line: "Americans are notorious for this. As far as we are concerned, we are the best at everything, and the way we do things is the most just and civilized way there is."

Well, yes! That is true. What country is better or more civilized than we are?

Regarding McCarthey, he did get too big for his britches, as do most of us taken away in the limelight, if we ever get there. But what he said was TRUE! There were Communists and Soviet agents spying on America for the Soviets—traitors in our midst.

"Why is America so angry at the world?"

I have never before in my 55 years on earth heard anybody suggest this. Who is America angry at? Nobody I know. Who gives more money, food, medicine, training, and time to the third world than the entire rest of the planet COMBINED? America, that's who. Hardly the actions of haters.

Slavery was accepted and practicing the world over at the time of our Founding Fathers. This is not what differentiates them. What differentiates them is that they founding the first country governed by the People, with Liberty and Freedom, ever on the face of the earth. This should not be poo-poohed. Our founders were the greatest group of men ever assembled—except the Apostles—as far as men go. They, of course, had feet of clay just like you and me.

The powers that are in charge of this country today will one day banish Christianity altogether. It is not part of their worldview. You may be in favor of this. I hope not.

A M Werner profile image

A M Werner Hub Author 2 years ago

James, thanks for commenting and I do respect your opinion and will try my best to answer your questions. I see Christianity as a spiritual body beyond the boundaries set by men through nations. There is a patriotism inherent in every civilization to believe they are the best, the most just - superior. America may "seem" better than others, but there are plenty of people around the world who love where they live and want nothing to do with the American lifestyle. Our city streets are littered with people who don't see the American system as the most civilized. They are the ones subjected to government workers who don't give a "damn" about their lives and yet have authority to make decisions for them and their childen. We really are not "freer" as we believe we are. The U.S. locks up more of it's own citizens than any other nation on earth. How can that be when it is a government for the People. Perhaps the freedoms the people want are not being respected.

I cannot see any association at all between the apostles and the founders of the U.S. The apostles spread a message of peace and love, and did it while suffering imprisonment, shipwrecks, abuse and martyrdom. The founders of this country picked up guns and swords and killed to spread their message and enforce it. It is my belief that violence that leads to death should always be poo-poohed. It is never something to be glorified and praised.

Why is America angry at the world? The answer is simple. The world is constantly reminding us that our superiority is not so superior, and that our invicibility is not so untouchable. This is not heaven and we can't make it so. The world does not respect us. And charity, Christ Himself explained that when the widow gave the two mites in Luke 21:1-4. It is not the amount given that matters, but rather the selflessness that accompanies it - the suffering it may cause (1 Corinthians 13:4). And sadly, much of the injury that American charity goes to is a result of captialism run amuck. Greed has caused a great deal of the suffering around the world - and since America is the greatest consumer in the world of the things produced - there is guilt by association to the products made.

Even if McCarthy was right and their were communists in our midst, I guess the Constitution gave them every right to be there without being harassed - that is freedom. There may have been some agents but America does the same thing to other countries and places moles. Why act like the leaders in this nation have more scruples than those of other nations? They don't. They injustices and governments to topple, and that is why they fear it happening to them. Every nation is only looking in a mirror at themselves.

And lastly, how many are being vilified, mocked, ridiculed, persecuted and even killed by our government? The answer is given to us by Christ once again. When He separated the sheep and the goats in Matthew 25:31-46, the goats did not understand either. But Christ, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or naked, or in prison, or sick? And He answered and said, When you did not notice those around you who were hungry, thirsty, naked, in prison, or sick - you did not see Me.

How many people has the U.S. government - under any leadership starting with Washington, right up and through Obama - caused to be hungry, thirsty, naked, imprisoned or sick? It is my personal belief that when we support the system that creates the leadership that does this, that wars, the Lord will not hear the voice of them. Yahweh warned us in 1Samuel Chapter 8 what happens when we choose to turn to other men and women for leadership. He said they would be unjust, and take from us, and send our children to war. And then, when we don't like what these leaders are doing, and try to pray for intervention from the Lord - the Lord will not hear us.

1 Samuel 8:18 'And ye will cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and Yahweh will not hear you in that day.'

I will not be part of electing anyone. Like I have always said, I have chosen my King and His kingdom is not of this world. I am in this world but not of this world. I am a pilgrim and a stranger. I will represent my King by spreading the gospel of peace and love by word and deed. I will not spread the word through laws, guns and coercion. As it states in Revelation 22:11, If a man wants to be unjust and filthy, let him be unjust and filthy still. Peace.

Well, I surely agree that our freedoms are being steadily eroded, not least because of encroachments by bureaucracy. I agree that the Kingdom of God has no borders. I thought you wrote that OUR government was killing the people of God. I am fully aware that there are Christian martyrs today around the world—but not here. Not yet. There will be, when the Social Justice crowd gets their way.

How many people did the Founders of our nation kill?

Regarding Charity, Americans give more of the wealth and time they have in proportion than the rest of the world combined. That is a fact. Go to darkest Africa and who do see there digging wells, feeding the hungry, training the farmers, helping the hurting? 9 out of 10 are Americans! Who leads the entire world by FAR in prison ministry? Americans. I'm not talking jinogism here. I'm talking about the facts. Hate America or not—the truth is the truth.

If you want to see the result of toppling the achievers in a society, please read up on Rhodesia.

The Constitution specifically bans treason.

The rest of words have a sincere depth to them that I truly admire. You are surely right—our Kingdom is not of this world. But that does not mean we are to all be like St Anthony. Peace to you Brother. I hope I have not been offensive. You're a great dude—as far as dudes go. :D

James - No harm done! We are all out here just throwing our two-cents in the wind. I am an "extreme" pacifist without any political leanings. The only government structure I recognize in this world is parents and their children - all of them content to do what is right at any cost. You have my profound thanks for indulging me yet again. Peace.
